Cheap does not mean undemanding. Small tyres carry the same summer heat as big ones, and a hatchback is often driven harder in the city: tight roundabouts, constant braking and parking against kerbs. Delivery and rental hatchbacks can also cover very high mileage.
For most owners a quality touring tyre from a mid-range brand gives the best balance of price, grip and life. We fit hatchback tyres at your home or workplace and dispose of the old set.
Getting value from small tyres
In 14 to 16 inch sizes the price gap between budget and premium tyres is often only AED 80 to 150 per tyre, so the extra grip and life of a better tyre is cheap insurance. A mid-range tyre from Hankook, Kumho or Yokohama usually lasts 40,000 km or more on a hatchback.
Very cheap unknown brands can harden quickly in UAE sun, losing wet grip within two summers even when tread looks fine.
City driving and kerb damage
Kerb scuffs on the sidewall are the most common reason small-car tyres are replaced early in Dubai and Sharjah. Parallel parking in older areas such as Karama, Al Nahda or Rolla often means rubbing a high kerb.
A light scuff in the rubber is cosmetic, but a cut that exposes cords or a bulge means the tyre must be replaced. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and the technician will tell you which it is.
Hot hatches need performance tyres
Hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R, Mini John Cooper Works and Hyundai i30 N need UHP tyres with W or Y speed ratings, not economy touring tyres. A Golf GTI Mk8 typically runs 225/40 R18 or 235/35 R19.
These cars are front or all-wheel drive with a lot of power, so the front tyres wear quickly. Rotate them if the sizes allow, and check camber wear on the inner edges.
Technician tips
- Spend a little more for a known brand; the price gap in small sizes is narrow.
- Rotate every 10,000 km to spread front-wheel-drive wear.
- Keep pressure at the placard figure to protect fuel economy.
- Park a tyre's width away from high kerbs.
- Check the DOT date; small sizes sometimes sit in warehouses longer.
- Do not drop to a lower load index to save money.
